There are many types of leather. Different types of raw leather and different tanning methods can be used to make leather suitable for various purposes. The leather commonly used in genuine leather products has the following characteristics.
(1) Characteristics of cow leather
Cow leather includes yellow cow leather, yak leather and buffalo leather.
Yellow cow leather has fine grain, thick skin, high strength, fullness and good elasticity, so its products are beautiful, comfortable and durable. Yellow cow leather is mainly used for clothing, leather shoes, bags and ball products.
The grain of yak leather is slightly worse than that of yellow cow leather, but its other properties and uses are roughly similar to those of yellow cow leather.
The surface of buffalo leather is relatively rough, the fiber is coarse and loose, and the strength is slightly lower than that of yellow cow leather. Other properties are similar to those of yellow cow leather. Buffalo leather is mainly used to make sofas, bags, and is also often used to make leather shoes.
(2) Characteristics of pig leather
Pig leather is quite different from cow and sheep leather, mainly in that the grain is rough, the fibers are tight and plump, and the elasticity is poor. However, the strength of pig leather is similar to that of cow leather and higher than that of sheep leather, so its products are durable but less beautiful.
Pig leather can be used to make various leather products.
(3) Characteristics of sheep leather
Sheep leather is divided into goat leather and sheep leather.
Goat leather has a fine and beautiful grain and good softness, but its durability is worse than that of cow leather. Goat leather products are beautiful and comfortable, but the surface friction resistance and durability are average. Goat leather is mainly used for the production of high-end women's leather shoes, clothing, gloves and women's handbags.
Sheep leather is softer than goat leather, but its durability is not as good as goat leather. Sheep leather products are more beautiful and comfortable to wear, but the durability is poor. Sheep leather is mainly used for the production of clothing and gloves, and is also used to make high-end leather shoes and soft bags.
(4) Characteristics of full-grain leather
Full-grain leather refers to leather that retains and uses the original appearance of animal skin (the side with hair), also called face leather. Some full-grain leathers are used directly without coating, but most are processed with beautification coating.
Full-grain leather requires high-quality raw leather with less damage, and the processing requirements are also high, so full-grain leather is high-end leather. Since the surface of the raw leather is completely retained on the leather, its fastness performance is good. Generally speaking, the surface of full-grain leather is not coated or the coating layer is very thin, which maintains the softness and good breathability of the leather. The grain of genuine leather is used to reflect the natural style, making it comfortable and beautiful.
Full-grain leather is mostly colored with dyes, so the industry usually calls full-grain leather with dyes as the main colorant of the coating aniline leather (or full aniline leather). This type of leather is dyed evenly and has clear grain. It is not coated with any film-forming material with a covering effect. The grain of the leather surface is not covered at all and is preserved. After the leather surface is modified, only a very thin colorless and transparent layer of leather grain is visible.
Full-grain leather is used for all high-grade leather products. When cleaning and caring for this type of genuine leather products, attention should be paid to maintaining its unique style and feel.
(5) Characteristics of semi-aniline leather
The raw material of this type of leather has some but very shallow scratches on the grain surface. In order to cover the scratches and retain the natural grain of the leather, a small amount of pigment, adhesive film-forming agent and dye should be used to lightly spray the leather to form a semi-covering layer with a very thin coating, so that the grain of the leather surface is vaguely visible.
