How Do I Maintain a Paper Notebook That Can Remain for Years
Invest in a high quality notebook that has white, acid-free (alkaline) 100% rag paper pages. Acidic wood pulp paper will deteriorate within 100 years. To be extra safe, buy and use a test pen to make certain the pages are non acidic.
Your notebook should have a hand-sewn binding using acid-free cotton thread--not glued into its covers. All the binding materials must also be acid-free. To be extra sure, hire a local artisan hand-bookbinder to make the notebook to your specifications.
Inks are problematical. India inks are acidic as are many other inks, and dye-based inks fade over time. For your thousand year record, write in ordinary graphite pencil. A slightly harder pencil, say #3, will write a little lighter but will also impress your writing into the page in a positive way and will not smudge.
Write on only one side of the page to minimize any future transfer of graphite to another page of writing.
Date and number the pages of the notebook as you write. Your handwriting will be distinctive and the binding and numbering will ensure that no one may easily remove or substitute pages without being obvious to a careful future reader.
Write and store your notebook somewhere in a dry climate. The desert would be ideal, with no humidity to foster the growth of mold and few insects adapted to eat paper. Make sure you are above the desert floor and out of any flood plains. There's a reason the Dead Sea Scrolls were found preserved in a desert cave.
Store your notebook in a sealable, waterproof container of acid free material that will not rust, corrode, or outgas over time. Avoid plastics, metal, and wood. A ceramic box, perhaps space age ceramics, would be ideal.
Once your notebook is filled, copy its contents by hand to one or more duplicate notebooks which is will be stored in different parts of the world.
